Wellbeing for creators: A checklist

Annemarie Dooling is the program manager for News Creator Corps.

Burnout in creators can look like hopelessness, exhaustion that doesn’t go away, anxiety that causes you to scroll instead of sleeping, and putting undue stress on yourself to reach goals.

Many creators are untrained business owners with unparalleled public critique, expected to be available all the time. That can cause them to feel overwhelmed and, at the least, not serve their communities to the best of their ability.

Here are some ways you can keep your balance:

  • Define working hours: Turn off your accessibility, and create working hours just like a desk job. Be particularly mindful of signing off near bed time since scrolling can interrupt sleep patterns.
  • Use the platform tools to craft your audience: Block and mute whenever you’re uncomfortable. Use keyword filters to stop abuse from appearing in your comments, and insist any partners do the same. The tools are developed for a reason and there’s no awards for accepting abuse.
  • Create with a friend: Isolation can lead to loneliness and depression. Set a date with other creators to use a space together, or have a standing video chat for support.
  • Keep boundaries: Speak to followers in comment threads and public forums, rather than DMs where abuse and scams can flourish. You don’t belong to the public.

And, know when to recharge:

  • Pursue a private hobby: Having an offline hobby that you don’t share can be a refuge for relaxation without worrying about hitting metrics.
  • Have a personal board of directors: Create an unofficial inner circle you can trust when you need someone to lean on without judgement.
  • Do nothing: Activities like bird watching provide the brain time to digest and categorize everything you’ve learned recently. That can improve your memory, too.
  • Turn off notifications during off hours: There will always be time to catch up and you’ll feel more refreshed without the false sense of urgency pulling you back in.
  • Understand your finances: Financial instability is a top concern for creators. Create a budget and understand what you can and can’t do before overcommitting. Knowing where you stand can help you say no to too many projects.
